Good Beer Hunting

LaTreace Harris

Every Friday in 2023, LaTreace Harris, aka The Beery Godmother, released a new video as part of her Beer Fact Friday Instagram series. The short and relatable videos break down common myths and misconceptions around beer, dives into specific styles and ingredients, explains technical aspects of brewing, and encourages viewers to explore the wide variety of craft beer options to expand their palates. They’re informative, original, accessible, and yes, fun—because isn’t beer supposed to be fun?

Considering white males still make up the majority of the craft beer industry, both professionally and as consumers, having a Black woman disseminate tons of practical information and communicate it without judgment helps those who may not feel comfortable engaging in craft beer culture feel empowered to not just participate, but enjoy what beer does have to offer.

As Harris’ viewership has grown, so has her influence—this year alone, she presented at Crafted for Action’s craft beer conference in Atlanta, was named a Future 40 Tastemaker by Wine Enthusiast, won a Creators in Bev grant from Women of the Bevolution and Beer is for Everyone, brewed a collaborative New Zealand-style Double IPA with Biggerstaff Brewing Company, passed the tasting portion of the Certified Cicerone exam, and celebrated one year of The Beery Godmother, LLC.

Beyond her social media presence, Harris also offers professional beer consultation services to help train brewery and restaurant staff on beer best practices, serving techniques, ingredients and processes, off flavors, and more. Her entrepreneurial spirit and unflappable video presence make her a bright star in the beer world, and one I hope continues to shine in 2024 and beyond.
