Grocery stores and online retail have been the centerpiece to consumer habits during the COVID-19 pandemic as shoppers stocked homes with food and items from all aisles. That included beer, which saw a record March in grocery stores—multiple weeks were equivalent to the top-selling beer holiday of the year, the Fourth of July.
This negatively impacted convenience stores, as people traveled less and made fewer "fill-in," "special purpose," and "quick trip" visits to any store in lieu of large purchases meant to keep a house stocked for two weeks or more. Popping into the local 7-Eleven or BP to grab a single-serve beer or six-pack while gassing up the car just wasn’t happening as much.
But as state stay-at-home restrictions ease or end, convenience stores are set to bounce back, offering some return to normalcy for impulse shoppers, and taking advantage of low gas prices. Sign up to read more.
