“Three miles.”
That was the answer. The question was, “How far from here to Terreux?” And the person asking it was my coworker, The Collective Brewing Project’s Ryan Deyo. He climbed into the van of Bruery Terreux’s Jeremy Grinkey, and we hit the road.
Those three miles stretched like an eternity because it was an escape from shop talk for the pair of brewers. How California has changed, how Deyo grew up in Long Beach, and the school recital Grinkey would attend that night replaced packaging, yeast, and barrel talk—at least for a few minutes.
The reprieve welcomed and necessary, these two relaxed as friends united under a common goal—burritos and gyros at Alea Cafe. It was a good three miles, come to think of it.
