These are the words, images, and beers that inspired the GBH Collective this week. Drinking alone just got better, because now you're drinking with all of us.
READ.// “All that pink. All those plants. All that white. It’s so clean! Everything’s fun, but not too much fun. And there, in the round mirror above the couch: It’s you. You know where you are. Or do you?" Here's a sobering long read examining the millennial aesthetic across interior and graphic design, politics, consumerism, etc. This article sounds like it was written by that one asshole in your class critique—it’s really good, but hurts to read—and had me shame-sweating. One the one hand, don't yuck yums and mind your own business. On the other, how should we approach inoffensive sameness and place more importance on weird authenticity?
LOOK.// I've listened to the new Yves Tumor song about 20 times a day since it came out. It is already the 2020 song of the year; if you don't agree, you are wrong. The video is a technicolor Ridley Scott daydream; a glittery encore at the Bang Bang Bar. Watch it 700 times.
DRINK.// Ruth Lewandowski Feints
"Working at once with all of the Piedmontese varieties found at Fox Hill, Feints is quite an unexpected wine. It's a co-fermentation of Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo and Arneis...yes, three reds and a white (and nearly 50% white each year)! Full carbonic maceration keeps things poppy, light on its feet and fresh. For all intents and purposes this is the complex light red wine go-to and truly couldn't be more gluggable." I will not pretend to know what all of that means, but I like the word “gluggable,” and my girlfriend brought this wine home and we drank it and had a lovely time. Pair this wine with a lovely time.
READ.// “Social media in 2020 is so ingrained that it’s no longer a supplement or even an addiction. It’s just an accelerated extension of the way humans have always behaved. We live in a culture of constant updates. You want to unsubscribe? Well, you can’t.” This piece by Lindsay Crouse, a senior staff editor of the New York Times’ Opinion section, is not only about social media, but also about relationships and self-love—and what happens when Lady Gaga’s new boyfriend is your ex from college.
LOOK.// Bow Market in Somerville, Massachusetts is home to “30+ independent food, art, and retail shops around a public courtyard in the heart of Union Square.” With feminist wine bar Rebel Rebel, Remnant Brewing, a vinyl shop, a pizza place, and other stores, it's hard not to find something to like. I got a grant accepted in an open call for artists to have a store front rent-free for a month. I'll be here for the month of March showing and selling art, creating a community space with a library, and selling some merch. One of the things I am offering is the GBH Feel Goods Tote. Come by if you're in the area. Support the arts and local shops!
DRINK.// Harpoon Brewery x Mike's Pastry Cannoli Stout
“Are you a Mike's or Modern type of guy/gal/x?” A common conversation in Boston, where these North End bakeries continue to lure flocks of tourists with their battling cannolis and other confectionary treats. For this release, Harpoon has taken inspiration from the unique design of the cannoli box, and created a Pastry Stout that fits right in with current craft beer trends. Collab? Check. Dessert-like flavor? Check. Local fandom? Check.
READ.// “‘We looked in the data and saw there were some customers who were really good at picking out failures’ — so good, in fact, that a newly introduced product was less likely to survive if it attracted these buyers. (And if they bought it repeatedly, its chances of survival were even worse.) Professor Tucker called these people harbingers of failure because, statistically speaking, their fondness for a product heralded its demise.” I had a friend in college who was so wrong about so many things, that if we were driving and he said “turn left” I’d promptly turn right. We all know who you are.
LOOK.// My former co-worker Reina Takahashi has been one of my previous “Ls” for her incredible paper sculptures. But something about the precision and simplicity of her new paper letterforms is just transcendent. Who knew I’d be middle-aged and just waiting for the letter J to drop on Instagram tomorrow?
DRINK.// Middle Brow Beer Co’s Mosaic Crush
Tomorrow is daylight savings time, and it’ll be 60 degrees, which seems like a perfect day to drink this grassy little IPA and finally chuck the Christmas tree off the back porch.
