These are the words, images, and beers that inspired the GBH Collective this week. Drinking alone just got better, because now you're drinking with all of us.
READ.// “Part of the trouble us men seem to have with talking about abortion is grammatical. The possessive pronouns—her, our, my—are all wrong. How to describe my position in relation to the event?” I kept this story untouched in a tab for a couple weeks before finally diving in. It comes from a local acquaintance of mine, so that makes me all the happier to know someone so thoughtful approached the piece I kept wanting someone to write: what abortion access means to men who date birthing people and how so many men's lives were affected by abortion—yet they have no idea. Very smart, tender, self aware.
LOOK.// I have to avoid Twitter sometimes throughout the work day because all it takes is one deep dive into another survivor's macabre account of abuse (which, of course, they surely deserve to tell and publish) to totally derail my focus. But then there's this account, which is a welcome pause from the otherwise often-difficult platform. These cats are definitely cursed.
DRINK.// New Realm Brewing Company’s Hoptropolis IPA
I grabbed one of these at Boxcar down the road from my house in Atlanta yesterday for a nice little afternoon sip. Crisp, not too boozy—a great floral punch in the jaw.
READ.// "A new survey by Gatwick Airport in London found 15% of men and 6% of women said they were more likely to cry when watching a film on a flight than they would if seeing it at home." With a long international flight coming up this week, I read this BBC article from 2017 with interest. It explains a few of the ways flying affects our moods, to say nothing of our bodies. Songs that I listen to at home without much response can make me teary when I listen to them in flight—now I know why.
LOOK.// Netflix's new "Night On Earth" series had me searching for images of bioluminescent waters; plankton can emit green and blue light and make the water itself seem to glow. This brief video from Wales-based photographer Kris Williams shows how he captures this ephemeral magic in real time.
DRINK.// Sierra Nevada’s Fantastic Haze Imperial IPA
Sierra Nevada scored a big hit with Hazy Little Thing, so naturally, a brand extension was on the way: Fantastic Haze Imperial IPA. Despite wheat and oats in the grain bill, the 9% DIPA isn't overly chewy or thick, finishing cleanly but leaving sunny tangerine, orange pulp, and lime zest hop flavor on the palate.
READ.// “Chicken drumsticks, on the other hand, have not enjoyed the influencer treatment since Fred Flintstone chomped his way through them.” I'm on the record as a chicken guy. Growing up, the chicken leg was my favorite piece, but I will fully admit I fell prey to the chicken thigh craze and changed my allegiance. Thanks to Cathy Erway, I'm team leg once again.
LOOK.// Anna Vu documents food she eats (and wine she drinks on a separate account) through felt pen illustrations. Important note: they are goddamn delightful.
DRINK.// Riesling Dry Estate "vom Roten Schiefer" 2018
FUCK YEAH RIESLING! Gunderloch's Dry Riesling is everything I want out of a wine. Salty and acidic with a ton of citrus notes in the aroma. Perfect for a weeknight, or any night, frankly.
