These are the words, images, and beers that inspired the GBH Collective this week. Drinking alone just got better, because now you're drinking with all of us.
READ.// “‘If Mexican cartels were the big-box stores of the drug market,’ says Dr. Bryce Pardo, a drug-policy researcher at the RAND Corporation, ‘the Chinese are Amazon’ — cheap, convenient and ubiquitous.” This story in the New York Times digs into the tragedy, mystery, humble beginnings, and extraordinary growth of the drug and disaster known as fentanyl.
LOOK.// Some people think graffiti artists are vandals. I think of them as working-class tattoo artists for walls, trains, and any other unorthodox canvases.
DRINK.// Threes Brewing’s The World is Flat English Pale Ale
What I've always loved about Threes Brewing is the fact that it doesn’t just chase trends or brew things it thinks will be heavily hyped. This English Pale Ale is no exception—it’s dry and hoppy while still having just enough malt presence to give it body, and bready tones.
READ.// “‘The current cultural environment has been thirsty for something uplifting and inspiring,’ Pat Houston tells Rolling Stone. ‘Who better to inspire than Whitney, the most exhilarating vocalist of all time?’” “Higher Love,” one of Whitney's b-side tracks, hasn’t escaped my head since the remix was released back in June of this year. I get giddy at the intersection of her raw, captivating vocals and producer Kygo’s reminder that it’s time to fucking party again. This write-up shares how the track, first released in 1990 exclusively in Japan, has been given new life—and how it’s given us all a reason to dance again.
LOOK.// The Wingdom™, a Nashville-based Wingfluencer™, takes rating chicken wings to a serious level. Get lost in their Instagram page, which is dedicated to the gospel of extra-crispy, saucy, spicy wings.
DRINK.// Wrecking Bar Brewing’s Breaking Bob Kölsch
Last weekend was my first spent as an official resident of Atlanta, Georgia. Fall has arrived, and the air was crisp. The trees were a swath of green, yellow, gold, and burgundy. Nestled in the cozy back room of the Porter, I drank a beer as crisp as the air, and as golden as the leaves outside: Wrecking Bar Brewing’s Breaking Bob Kölsch. It was a fit for the weather, and for new beginnings.
READ.// “‘Airbnb approached us with this idea that sounded, quite frankly, a little weird, but we're used to being approached with things that are a little weird,’ [Paul Stanley] said. ‘I've played for a lot of land sharks. Now I finally get a chance to play for the ocean varieties.’” I saw Kiss live a few years ago, and can't think of anything more bizarre than Gene Simmons' tongue waving at great white sharks. Trust me, the photos are even stranger than you'd imagine.
LOOK.// There's something about other people's homes that I find enthralling. Whether it's single-story, rural American houses or apartments in a brutalist, European block, mundane residences have long fascinated me. Photographer Todd Hido's Homes at Night series really captures that simplistic beauty.
DRINK.// The Real Al Company's Crafty Apple
The Real Al Company's Crafty Apple is a thirst-quenching, medium cider, with a tiny hint of a wild bite. After a long day spent making cups and bowls and plates in the pottery studio, it was exactly what I needed.
