Good Beer Hunting

184. Read. Look. Drink.

These are the words, images, and beers that inspired the GBH Collective this week. Drinking alone just got better, because now you're drinking with all of us.

KRISTEN FOSTER

READ.// "Monday night, I made a mistake. I was on my way to a party—my friend, Melvin, was having a little thing, he’d caught a rat, and felt like sharing, when I took a wrong turn, and wound up on the field during the Giants-Cowboys game, on national television." During Monday Night Football last week, a cat got loose on the field—darting back and forth across the end zone, avoiding security guards’ attempts to catch it. Turns out, the cat—named Brian—told the story of his accidental 15 minutes of fame to the Wall Street Journal.

LOOK.// Gabe Reuben's Instagram feed is (mostly) full of magical photographs of the ocean and Maine—surfing, waves, boats, sand. Looking at the photos I instantly miss summer and the warmth of the sun. They almost make today's 4:30pm sunset bearable.

DRINK.// Yellow Bridge Brewing’s Midnight Luau
At Olly Olly this year, I took the opportunity to exchange some beers with other attendees. I brought NE IPAs and Suarez beers, and walked away with some U.K. cider, as well as a can of Yellow Bridge Brewing's Midnight Luau courtesy of Nick Naretto. Clocking in at 8%, a slow sipper like this Imperial Stout was the perfect beer to ring in my birthday with last Monday.

READ.// "We’re all going to die soon anyway so you may as well go out with Monster Munch crumbs on your face or a handful of Herta hotdogs in your cold dead hands." As Christmas capitalism creeps ever earlier in the year, festive sandwiches have hit shelves in the U.K. already. Because why wouldn't you want a full roast dinner slapped between two pieces of lifeless bread and slathered with the favorite condiment of the birthday boy himself: mayo? I know I would.

LOOK.// The older brother of my older brother's close friend, Bartholomew Beal makes paintings that have enthralled me for many years. Inspired by single lines of poetry, his portraits are otherworldly, and, at times, deeply moving.

DRINK.// Burning Sky Brewery’s Robust Porter
In the name of decluttering, I've been trying to drink my way through the stash of beers I'd put to one side for special occasions, or aging, only to forget about them. I don't know when my bottle of Burning Sky's Robust Porter was squirreled away, but I do know that the big, warming qualities of this beer are perfect for blustery autumn nights. I only wish I'd hidden a few more away, now.

MARK SPENCE

READ.// “‘There is no funding for rural grocery stores,’ said Nancy McCloud, who scraped together $200,000 in personal loans and crowd-funded contributions to buy and reopen a closed supermarket in Mountainair, N.M. ‘There was nothing to help.’ Ms. McCloud said that Mountainair lost its grocery store nearly overnight two years ago, leaving the town without any other grocers within 45 miles.” I first became aware of food deserts after I moved to Chicago. In my naivety, It seemed inconceivable that large parts of a city were left without access to fresh produce. About a year ago, my brother told me he was worried that his local market, in the small town where he lives in Nebraska, may close. It is even more confounding that people surrounded by farmland are also cornered by stores that only sell processed foods.

LOOK.// You know…maybe Reverend Shaw Moore, the father and pastor from “Footloose,” was right. Relax and have fun!

DRINK.// Casa de Vila Nova’s Vinho Verde
I recently had this Portuguese white blend while at the fantastic Tu restaurant in Charleston. Amid a delicious blitz of flavors during an Indian "omakase" meal, this wine was a workhorse, cutting through the spice and reinvigorating the palate with bright citrus flavors and fresh acidity. Through the magic of the internet, I've realized how affordable this wine is, without the (understandable) restaurant markup.
