These are the words, images, and beers that inspired the GBH Collective this week. Drinking alone just got better, because now you're drinking with all of us.
READ. // “‘Can I see your ID?’ asks the security attendant. We produce our California driver’s licenses. ‘Sorry, I mean your employee ID,’ he corrects. We take this as a win: Based on our outfits, he assumes us to be cast members. We say we are merely guests, and he frowns. ‘Okay…I’m going to have to get someone to approve this.’” If you cut me open I bleed Star Wars, and I have been waiting very impatiently to make my way to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. In the meantime I have read dozens of articles about what you can buy, and what the rides are like. But this is the first article I've read from the perspective of two people who went to Galaxy's Edge as characters. I hope you love something as much as they love Star Wars.
LOOK. // If you upgraded your iPhone to iOS 13, you now have access to Apple Arcade. The breakout game is Sayonara Wild Hearts: an "interactive pop album." If you need more convincing, here's the crazy trailer.
DRINK. // Hill Farmstead’s Double Citra
I don't drink Hill Farmstead very often but I do drink my fair share of Hazy IPAs, and this is definitely in the top 1% of them. While others may be just as juicy and vibrant, nothing gets close to the incredible mouthfeel of a Hill Farmstead beer.
READ. // "[Vegetation] combined with a ‘no-wall’ kitchen, allow the outdoors in, with Mitchell hoping that in time, the plants will grow to take over the home." Last week I flew home to New Mexico with my good friend to show her around the desert. I grew up in the mountains outside of Albuquerque, generally surrounded by a wide variety of rocks and lizards and bugs and trees; oftentimes most of these things would find their way into our house. I love living in the city but seeing homes surrounded by, and inclusive of, nature makes me excited to get old, get *even more* sick of people, and retire to a hut in the middle of nowhere surrounded by quiet plants.
LOOK. // The main reason my friend and I visited New Mexico was to go see Stereolab play at Meow Wolf. I'm not too sure how to condense the whole experience here. Everyone should see Meow Wolf at least once in their lifetime, and seeing Stereolab play a sold-out show in the museum's tiny venue was kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
DRINK. // Marble Brewery’s Cerveza
When in Albuquerque, drinking a Marble Brewery beer isn't the most unique choice. But when in Albuquerque and getting caught outside during a heavy monsoon burst, drinking Marble's crisp Pilsner actually feels pretty special.
READ. // "I pray that the load we have strapped to his back does not serve as drag, but as propulsion." I've spent this week on business in Oxford, Mississippi, which is home to the writer John T. Edge. While all of Mr. Edge's writings are poignant and layered, his most recent for the Oxford American seems extra touching, and especially appropriate to share.
LOOK. // As the dogfather to a new puppy, I can't help but smile at the new series from photographer Vincent J. Musi documenting The Year of the Dogs. His Instagram account is well worth a follow, too.
DRINK. // Wiseacre Brewing Company’s Tiny Bomb Pilsner
While the brewing scene in Oxford may not be as robust as some of my other travel destinations, being near Memphis, Tennessee and seeing Wiseacre beer in most establishments serves as a great reminder of the wonderful and crazy time Austin L. Ray and I had a few years back.
