These are the words, images, and beers that inspired the GBH Collective this week. Drinking alone just got better, because now you're drinking with all of us.
READ. // “I can stand outside of myself and look back at this young photographer learning how to take pictures, learning how to see.” Think of an iconic photograph from the last 40 years, and there's a good chance Annie Leibovitz took it. Comprising upwards of 4,000 photographs, a new L.A. exhibition, Annie Leibovitz: The Early Years, 1970-1983, traces her career beginnings at Rolling Stone.
LOOK. // The Fervent Few #photography channel is always filled with amazing shots from members around the world. But I always look forward to Sean’s posts. His street photography captures human moments, bringing you right into the scene with him.
DRINK. // Allagash & Dupont’s Collaboration Saison
What's better than trying the most recent collaboration between Allagash and Brasserie Dupont? Having your first taste poured by Dupont's fourth-generation brewmaster, Olivier Dedeycker, at the Craft Beer Cellar in Belmont, Massachusetts. Brewed with Saison Dupont yeast and Cascade hops, it's everything you would hope for from these two breweries.
READ. // "It's not just whether you think the song is 'good' or not. There’s a different calculus: Whether or not you think memes are funny, musical genres are sacrosanct, and the internet is an agent of opportunistic good or one of chaotic evil." I'm fascinated by Lil Nas X's rise from teenaged meme trafficker to trap country star. If you have no idea what I'm talking about (or even if you do), this Lindsay Zoladz piece is worth a read.
LOOK. // Sometimes, the internet is good. Sometimes, the internet gives us a thread of Henry Rollins and shelves.
DRINK. // Gate City Brewing's Citras Maximus
I'm not sure I understand the India Pale Lager style well enough to know what makes a great one, but I am sure that this beer is goddamn delicious. Single-hopped with Citra and clocking in at 5.5% ABV, it's a winning pick for hopheads and Lager lovers alike. Which means I'll be drinking and recommending it all summer long.
READ. // "And now, as Chicago’s first Black lesbian mayor prepares to take office—and the wealthiest parts of this city cheer her on—we wonder who will listen to these dire needs. Because Lightfoot never has." At face value, a black lesbian being elected mayor of a major U.S. city is a huge victory. However, in this critique, Benji Hart explores how that might not be the case.
LOOK. // Since I've started taking beginner's pottery classes, I can't help but notice beautiful pots everywhere. Jono Smart is a potter whose work continually astounds me, epitomizing elegance and simplicity in stunning, subtle tones.
DRINK. // Cigar City Brewing’s Jai Alai India Pale Ale
Grabbing an imported American beer can feel like a bit of a gamble at times, and, as such, the only cans of Jai Alai I've drunk have been a little faded. Since bringing a few back from Florida recently, I've relished getting stuck into a classic, and savoring that big ol' West Coast punch.
