Like many ’90s kids, I first heard about gin from Snoop Dogg—Seagram’s, to be exact. But his endorsement made me leery of the spirit, even once I’d come of age. Gin was potent, something I should steer clear of. Plus, growing up with the saying “gin will make you sin” ringing in my ears didn’t exactly make me excited to try it.
Then my bestie started drinking gin, and naturally, I followed suit. I have hazy memories of us hanging out on my porch, sipping gin and tonics with a squeeze of lime. Since then, I keep a bottle (or three) on hand, especially in the springtime. Sometimes I’ll make an elaborate cocktail, but my go-to is a quick G&T. It’s such a simple drink, and it really celebrates all those piney and spicy notes I love so much.
When Tiffanie Barriere told me she was hosting a gin workshop for Charleston Wine + Food, I knew I had to be there. What better way to discover more about gin than from the Drinking Coach at the Gin Joint? Sure, I could have learned about genever, the OG gin, from the internet. Or I could have Googled the different types of gin—London Dry, Plymouth, aged, and New World. But it’s more fun learning in person from an expert, especially when gimlets are being served.
