Once again Northern California is burning. A rare and unexpected summer storm passed through, showering lightning strikes across the state and igniting hundreds of fires in one of the world’s most famous wine regions. The same week that harvest started, residents of Sonoma, Napa, Solano, and Lake Counties began evacuating their homes. Many have followed what now feels like a set routine—this is, unfortunately, nothing new.
At Shady Oak Barrel House in Santa Rosa, they are no stranger to evacuation orders, nor the smell of smoke in the air. In the past they tackled the issue head-on, releasing a beer called Fuck PG&E—a not-so-subtle jab at the electric company that has caused many of the fires in this area. Now the flames have returned during an already-hectic time for many small businesses.
Last week also saw the arrival of a new character at the brewery. A small black kitten made his way into the warehouse, walked right up to the staff, and demanded to be petted. Every day since, he’s followed employees around the brewery, observing and occasionally meowing before trotting off to find something to play with. Fearless and incredibly affectionate, he reliably returns and rolls onto his back to expose his skinny belly. When I visit, staffers are asking around to see if he had a home—but I can tell they want to keep him.
As I reflect on our cars being covered in dust and soot, I recommend that we name him Ash.
“He’s the best thing to happen [to us] in 2020.”
