A recent beer run to Tilted Barn Brewery in Exeter, Rhode Island is the most normal thing I’ve done in a long time. Sure, there are the safety precautions you would come to expect at this point—curbside pick-up, no pours, social distancing—but being able to take a quick peek at the construction on the brewery’s new space with co-owner Matt Richardson and three of his four children feels like some return to normalcy.
As I snap a few photos—from at least six feet away—of his kids Libby and Milo building imaginary towers and breweries from scrap wood, I realize this is the first time in months that I’ve really felt the weight of a camera in my hand, and captured a candid image of another human being.
A blueprint of the new building left on a makeshift table is what really catches my eye, though. It’s a confident reminder that there are still people making plans for the future—plans for socializing, and not just social distancing.
