Next to Hill Farmstead Brewery, Shaun Hill's childhood home sits atop one of the rolling peaks in the Vermont countryside near the town of Greensboro. When my Jeep crested the dirt road and the landscape opened up on this sight, I was instantly transported to my own grandmother's house — chalk white and similarly situated in the Appalachians of Pennsylvania when I was twelve. Houses like these feel like part of the soil itself — weathered, un-plumb, and always damp from the rain the night, or even week before. But we choose to live in them — largely because they carve out a home in us.
