Good Beer Hunting

We’re voracious consumers of culture. And each week, a member of our team shares the words, images, and beers that inspired them.

Hyland Mather’s Lost Object

Read.// It’s not easy to categorize Cherry Hill: A Childhood Reimagined by photographer Jona Frank, but that’s the allure of it. Not quite a memoir, not quite a photography book, this extraordinary hybrid features short prose vignettes about Frank's youth in suburban New Jersey alongside arresting images that recreate her childhood memories (and star the imitable Laura Dern as Frank’s mother.) As original and unforgettable as a coming of age read can get.

Look.// Further greetings from Asbury Park. The Wooden Walls Project, a local public art installation, has been bringing artists from around the world to create stunning murals in the seaside town Bruce Springsteen once named an album after since its inception in 2015. If you can’t make it to see the artwork in person, follow their Instagram account (@woodenwallsproject) and be sure to check out highlights of the progress of the newest piece, a mural by Japanese artist ONEQ, completed this summer.

Drink.// Lion's Roar Brewing Passionfruit Seltzer

I'm a beer lover who got diagnosed with celiac a few years ago, and though I still enjoy going to breweries, it's hard to find something appealing to drink. Even if there is a cider or a hard seltzer on tap, I’m usually scared off by the prospect of something overly sweet. So I’m glad I listened to the beertender’s assurances at Westfield, New Jersey’s Lion’s Roar and didn’t let the fruit keep me from sampling this find. More earthy than fruity, it’s an excellent gluten-free offering from one of the newest breweries on the central New Jersey scene.
