Good Beer Hunting

no. 293

In a town—Bloomington, Indiana—known for some of the world’s finest limestone, Indiana University, and one of the first big screen appearances of Dennis Quaid (that'd be 1979's Breaking Away), Upland Brewing Co. set up shop in the late 1990s. With a four-barrel batch in 2006, the brewery began to tinker around with the funkier side of things. Now, more than 10 years later, they have their newest facility, The Wood Shop.

Sunlight fills the room through large windows and the white subway tile behind the taps is a clean contrast to the stainless steel and oak that fills the space. It's a stark contrast to the original brewpub less than 50 yards away and the cellar it replaced. Barrels racked five high and a row of 90-BBL foeders would not have been possible in their old, one-story yellow shed. On the plus side, good things come to those who wait.
